Top 10 Poker Tells: Body Language of Players April 4, 2025, 3:06 am
‘Poker tell’ is a habit, physical reaction, clue or behavior which gives others more detail regarding your hand. Here are given top 10 poker tells that apply against advanced and novice players. Keep in mind that there are several exceptions and contradictions to poker rules. Moreover, experienced players will show false ‘tells’ to novices.
- Watch eyes: This is probably why several experienced players wear visors, caps or sunglasses when playing. Actually, they know very well that eyes hardly lie. For instance, several players cannot help and gaze at big ‘hole cards’. On the other hand, if one is seeking to steal pot, they look to left side to perceive if remaining participants who have not yet acted are glancing at cards.
- Facial Expression: Many professionals try to cover up their face by looking downward and wearing cap. This is just to avoid classic stare down which poker professionals are popular for. For example, they may study face for uneasiness (identifying weak hand) or look for recurring characteristics.
- Anxiety: It often occurs in a player when he is anticipating confrontation, or is confronted. According to psychologists, this is called ‘fight or flight’ spur response. Physical changes occur including muscle flexing, dry throat, palpitating heart-rate and others.
- Strong is ‘weak’ or vice versa: In most simplistic term, it often applies to newbie participants. Actually, the participants act like ‘actors’; especially if they have monster hand, they look rather disinterested.
- Glancing at chips: This factor again is related with eyes. The players often glance at chips when they link with board, often after flop. It may be sub-conscious response, but it tells that player is planning attack.
- Trembling Hands: This is by-product of nervousness. You need to be careful of players with trembling hands, as the anxiety may represent big hand.
- Glancing at hole-cards on flop: Many participants will peek at hole-cards; for example, when board is representing potential three card flush-draw. Usually, the participant looks to find out if the cards are linking as he keeps in mind only that 2 cards are diverse suits.
- Attitude/ body Posture: Some participants showcase apparent signals with their attitude, based upon ‘hand strength’. For example, players may take in their shoulders slump/drop whenever they have weak hand or are not so confident. On the other hand, one may perceive player is quite conscientious.
- Chip Stacking: Whenever one firstly sits down at table, he can learn the manner players collect chips. Though it is just generalization, ‘loose aggressive’ participants mostly maintain sloppy/unorganized stacks, whilst tight conservative participants keep neat, well organized stacks.
- Recurring Betting Patterns: More often, the most enlightening ‘poker tells’ are based upon the manner players habitually bet during specific circumstances. For instance, maybe the participant always ‘checks’ when he has made nuts, or players may frequently ‘fold’ after being ‘re-raised’.
These are top ten ‘poker tells’ that you should be always aware of, and hide during the game so that others cannot get benefited by that.
